The Tenth Annual Berkeley Undergraduate Prize for Architectual Design Excellence 2008
Berkeley Prize 2008

To Enter

In celebration of the Tenth Anniversary of the BERKELEY PRIZE, this year all Semifinalists, are invited to submit a proposal for either  the BERKELEY PRIZE Travel Fellowship, or the BERKELEY PRIZE Architectural Design Fellowship.

Study both opportunities closely and decide which best fits your current interests and abilities – and then respond as directed for one or the other award.

(NOTE:  If you submitted an essay as part of a team, all team members may apply for the Travel Fellowship individually.  If, however, you submitted an essay as part of a team and want to apply for the Architectural Design Fellowship, you must do so, once again, as a team.)

The Travel Fellowship

This year’s Travel Fellowship will be offered to the student who submits the best Proposal for a specific plan of travel and study away from their academic institution during the Summer of 2008.  This is a special opportunity to explore a part of the world and/or participate in an organized project that you feel will assist you in a deeper understanding of the social art of architecture.

Here are the ground rules:

1)  Your Proposal must be for participation in a program, conference, or specific project organized by an academic, institutional, or governmental or non-governmental social organization outside of your school.

2)  The purpose of your project is to further your understanding of the social art of architecture, focusing your interest in the social issue you have identified in this year’s BERKELEY PRIZE submittals.

3)  U.S. CITIZENS NOTE: Proposals may not be made to visit or study in countries with travel advisories issued by the United States Department of State. For all students, the BERKELEY PRIZE will not fund travel to countries currently in conflict.

4)  Travel must occur in the summer of 2008 during your academic institution’s summer break.

Submission requirements:

1)  A 1250-word Proposal to include:

    (a)  A description of the program and a persuasive argument why this program will benefit your education;
    (b)  An itinerary for the entire period of travel; and
    (c)  A budget covering all anticipated expenses.

2)  Reference to published material regarding the program, preferably a web site address that includes the name of a contact person.

3)  A letter of recommendation from a Faculty member in your academic institution who is familiar with your Proposal and who will confirm that your Proposal is suited to your abilities.

4)  Prior to receiving any funding, you will be asked to submit a travel Indemnification form provided by the BERKELEY PRIZE and a letter confirming that you are in adequate health to undertake the travel you propose.  (NOTE:  The BERKELEY PRIZE will pay for a one-time, health insurance policy for the length of your travel.)

Awards:

1)  The BERKELEY PRIZE will provide a stipend for air or rail transportation up to 1000USD to the selected destination from the city in which your academic institution is located.

2)  The BERKELEY PRIZE will provide a 2100USD stipend for basic living expenses.  It is expected that this will cover 2-3 weeks of your expenses.

3)  The BERKELEY PRIZE will consider reimbursing reasonable program fees on a case-by-case basis.

4)  The Award is provisional, based upon your ability to provide the BERKELEY PRIZE Committee with the required details and documents related to your Proposal to travel and study "abroad."
