International Union of Architects/Union Internationale Des Architectes XXII World Congress, Instanbul, Turkey 2005
The Berkeley Prize has arranged for the winner of the Travel Fellowship to participate in the International Union of Architects World Congress, Istanbul, 2005 in sessions organized by Anna Rubbo, Associate Professor, Faculty of Architecture, University of Sydney. There will be two major activities: A "Globalstudio" design charette, (June 25 - July 2), and the conference stream, entitled "People Building Better Cities." Details for the sessions are currently being developed. The Travel Fellowship Prize winner will both participate in the outlined activities and assist Professor Rubbo with tasks associated with the sessions.
The UIA is an international non-governmental organization founded in Lausanne in 1948 to unite architects from all nations throughout the world, regardless of nationality, race, religion or architectural school of thought, within the federations of their national associations.
The UIA represents over a million architects throughout the world through national architectural associations that form the 92 UIA Member Sections. A democratically structured body, the UIA is a unique world network uniting all architects.
The UIA Congress takes place every three years and brings together thousands of architects and architecture students from countries throughout the world. The Congress centres around a chosen theme which eminent personalities from the international architectural community are invited to develop and the host Member Section is responsible for its preparation. Debates, exhibitions, visits and festivals provide the unique platform for the exchange of cultural contacts between fellow professionals and students.
21 Congresses have taken place since 1948. The next, 22nd, Congress is to be held in Istanbul from June 25 - July 11, 2005.
It is anticipated that the requirements of the Congress will also allow the winning student to take advantage of and explore the European/Asian crossroads that is Istanbul. The winning student will be asked to submit a report for publication of their activities during the Travel Fellowship.
Global Studio
Around one billion people live in slums today, including some 56 million in developing countries. If nothing is done this number will reach two billion by 2020.
Two projects will address the challenge as part of the 2005 International Union of Architects Congress in Istanbul. Global Studio and People Building Better Cities employ the skills of architects, planners and communities as foundational players in this effort. Our aim is to promote forms of education and practice that will benefit the urban poor and improve the environment and living conditions of society’s poorest 20% in cities worldwide.
