DESIGN FOR A NEW AGE: Teaching the Social Art of Architecture. The work of the BERKELEY PRIZE Teaching Fellows.

During the 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years, the BERKELEY PRIZE sponsored a Teaching Fellowship to encourage undergraduate architecture studio faculty from around the world to investigate methods to teach the social art of architecture. An open competition was held to determine the recipients of a generous stipend for the purposes of integrating these new ideas into existing course offerings for the entire academic year at the Fellows' then current university or college.

The first year, the Fellows tracked the PRIZE's subject of Universal Design; the second year, the Fellows tracked the PRIZE's subject of Healthful Architecture. Periodic conference calls were held to review the progress of the faculty in undertaking their revitalized courses. Each Fellow was asked to write a final report outlining their efforts during the year. These reports showcase ideas in architectural education that are either completely new, or completely different from the vast majority of teaching in architecture today.

The PRIZE and the Teaching Fellows have written a manuscript based on the final reports and additional research and information. All of the work is pertinent to the topic of what and how to teach undergraduate students design for what we all believe is a fast approaching new age in architectural education and production. The following is the first draft of this manuscript. The draft is posted here to generate further theoretical progress and elicit commentary. It will be continually edited. The ultimate goal is to have it more widely circulated through publication.
